Mandy, 17 from Nottingham asks...
I've been with my boyfriend for seven months and we've just started having sex - it's the first time for both of us. The other day, the conversation turned to oral sex and my boyfriend mentioned something called 'deep throat' and said he'd really like me try it, but I'm afraid I don't know what's involved and I'm too embarrassed to tell him. Please enlighten me.

I'd say your boyfriend is asking you to run before you've properly learnt to walk. Deep throat involves taking a penis to the very back of your mouth and then some way down your throat, and it takes patience, practice and confidence to do it successfully. The person performing the act must learn to overcome their own strong gag reflex, which isn't easy. The man receiving the treat must introduce his penis into his lover's mouth cavity one small centimeter at a time, to give her time to get used to the feel and size of it, and to stop her natural urge to convulse. So as you can probably imagine, this is a very surgical form of oral sex, leaving no room for sudden movement and allowing for very little variation in the way it's executed. So the question begs to be asked: is it worth all the effort? When you consider how much fun there's to be had from regular oral sex, I'd argue you're best off sticking to the lighter stuff for a while. You can always give deep throat fresh consideration later, when you're more experienced and perhaps looking for a new challenge in your sexual repertoire. I'm sure your boyfriend won't mind if you put his request on ice. In fact, I'm guessing that when he put the idea of deep throat out there, he was simply trying to impress you with his grasp of naughty things you can get up to in the bedroom. Now that he has succeeded in wowing you with his knowledge, he probably won't give the matter another moment's thought.
